In a previous post, we talked about how challenging is to move precious items such as jewelry. We considered that it would be useful to expand this topic with important aspects to take in consideration when moving other types of valuable items: medicine, personal/financial documents, trading cards, small collectible items, china and crystal, sterling silver, modern electrical devices, Persian rugs, expensive paintings.

(1) Prior to packing, it is recommended to make a list of each valuable item that you own. This inventory can help you to organize better the transport for this type of objects, as they require special treatment.

(2) If you already have a concrete list of these special items, be sure to split them in categories, for example: antiques, art paintings, currency, china, coin sets, financial documents, furs, electronic gadgets, computer software etc. This is necessary since each type requires different packing techniques, materials (bubble wraps, foam peanuts, wooden crates etc.) and particular care.

(3) Contact your moving consultant regarding the valuable items you would like to transport. It is important to establish the details about insurance, types of packing boxes, shipment. Even if sometimes it can be safer to move precious stuff by yourself, there are massive objects of great value, which cannot be transported so easily without professional help.

(4) It is best to prepare a special room/closet for these items at your new residence, preferably without any windows and with a door that can be locked. This way, you can separate more clearly the valuable items from the rest of your moving boxes and you can avoid something missing or stolen.

(5) Use stickers and markers to tag each item and assign numbers. Do not forget to count objects transported in the moving truck as the movers take them off the truck.

(6) It is easy and useful to have recent photos of your precious collections, objects. You can keep them in a folder with all the papers required for insurance.

(7) Even though it might be costly, use special blanks to protect expensive carpets and don’t place them near boxes with liquids in order to prevent from unpleasant marks, stains.

(8) There are items that are best to be transported by the owner itself, such as sterling silverware, china and crystal objects, small collectibles (of great value for passionate collectors), and trading cards. These items can be the perfect target for thieves so it is important to be prepared and protected.
