Everything You Need to Know About Moving Boxes

Non-Slate Pool Tablen moving boxes

When moving, what’s most important to you? Making sure that your belongings arrive at the new destination safe and sound, right? Well, if so, then you should also make sure that you have the right moving boxes.

At Empire Movers, we have extensive experience with both commercial and residential moving. And we can assure you that quality moving boxes can make a difference. To help you out, we’ve put together a list of tips to tell you what you need to know about moving boxes.

1. Group Items Together

To make packing easier, pack items that are similar in size and weight together. But remember to take care of those smaller items.

This way, you will use the space inside the moving boxes more efficiently, and you’ll also be able to find items faster, when unpacking.

2. Wrap breakable items carefully

Take special care of smaller items or items that are breakable. Make sure you wrap them properly and place them correctly inside the moving boxes. For example, dishes should be placed on their side, like records, never flat.

If you believe that you’re not using the boxes the right way, remember that the items are what counts. It might be worth using a few extra boxes if it will help keep your breakable items from breaking during transportation.

3. Dividers are useful

This tip is also related to breakable items. Place dividers inside the moving boxes to make sure that breakable items such as wine glasses don’t hit each other during transportation. For extra protection, also wrap the glasses with either packing paper or bubble wrap.

4. Use quality moving boxes

Moving boxes are boxes that are specially designed for moving. Not just any box will do. Buying new, high-quality moving boxes, that are the exact sizes you need, is an investment. It’s not a waste of money. Trust us. Old, used or inadequate boxes can break at anytime, and their contents will be damaged.

5. Be smart when packing each box

Make sure that you don’t overfill your moving boxes. If you do, there’s always the risk that they may fall apart. Or you might injure yourself when transporting them. 30 pounds is an adequate weight.

This being said, also remember that a box that’s not completely full might collapse when stacked. So make sure that you fill the box without making it too heavy.

6. Label each box

To make it easier to transport and to find what you’re looking for, take care to label each box. This way, you will save a lot of time, as the movers will know exactly where to take the moving boxes. As a result, this will also save you money.

And if you plan to put the moving boxes in storage, remember to also seal them, to keep dust and insects out. You can do it with some tape, by placing it across the top of the box. Adding tape will also prevent the box from collapsing when stacked.

7. Heavy moving boxes go at the bottom

When stacking boxes, make sure that the heavy ones are at the bottom, while the lighter ones are on top. It probably goes without saying, but placing a heavy box on a lighter box will probably crush the contents of the second box. This is something that you want to avoid.

8. Stack the moving boxes like bricks

Stacking your moving boxes isn’t the time to play real-life Tetris. The goal is to protect your belongings; it’s not to see how many boxes you can cram into a tiny corner. Staggering the way you stack your boxes so they lay like bricks will help create a sturdy tower that can stand without falling.
