April 2, 2018
Moving is never easy, especially if you’re not a minimalist. It can be extremely overwhelming and stressful. But it doesn’t have to be. With the following moving tips, you can turn your move into a wonderful experience and avoid any headache.
You definitely need a plan
It doesn’t matter how big the move is. If you don’t have a plan and you’re not organized, things will go wrong. Creating a list and itemizing everything are very important. It will help you keep track of all your belongings, to make sure that you don’t lose anything. And you’ll also make life easier for the movers. At Empire Movers, we ask for every possible detail about the move. This information helps us transport our clients’ valuables safe and fast.
Knowing all the details of move allows us to avoid unpleasant surprises and also helps the client avoid any extra fees.
Don’t leave anything until the last minute
If you have to pack and leave in a hurry, then so be it. But, if you have enough time to plan for the move, don’t hesitate to take advantage of it. Start planning your move 30 or even 60 days before the move out date. The more time you have, the better the plan is. And the better the plan is, the smoother the move goes.
Communicate with your movers
Don’t assume your movers know everything. Let them know early on where they need to go, what types of objects they will be transporting, and what to expect. Like I said earlier, every information counts, as it makes life easier for the movers. Empire Movers has a team of experienced, professional movers. They’re strong, they know what they’re doing, and they all agree that knowing what to expect is the only way to make sure that you have a smooth move.
Some important information that you need to share with your movers:
- Weight of your items;
- Access restrictions;
- If disassembly and assembly are required.
Get the right moving truck
Choosing the right size moving truck is very important. It can save you a lot of money. So talk to your mover to see what what types of moving trucks you can choose from. Empire Movers features a fleet of well-maintained and clean moving trucks of different sizes: 16ft | 22ft | 26 ft.
Don’t hold on to things you no longer use
If you don’t need an item, then don’t take it with you. Donate it, sell it or just throw it away. There’s no reason for you to pay more for something you don’t need.
Try to avoid making a mess
Moving can be messy. It can generate a lot of waste, such as cardboard boxes, newspapers, bubble wrap and more. Once the move is done, you get stuck with all of these. That’s why it’s important to use reusable plastic bins that can be stored in a closet, after you’re done using them. Or you can talk to your movers and see if they can help. Empire Movers can provide you with high quality moving boxes and we’ll also take them away after we move you in your new locations.
It’s the only way to keep track of your stuff. Label your boxes and add them to a spreadsheet. This way, you won’t leave anything behind and you’ll also be able to take advantage of your moving insurance, in case something happens. Remember, if your items are not added to the moving insurance list, you won’t be compensated if something happens to them.
Check the moving policy at your new location
Some places don’t allow move-ins on Sunday. And you may also need to book a service elevator for the heavy stuff. This requires a security deposit of between $100 and $500. It all depends on the rules at your new place.
Don’t forget to prepare a moving day kit
Don’t let yourself get carried away by the move. When moving day comes, you’ll still need a few things such as a change of clothes, toiletry bag, etc. And also add some garbage bags, toilet paper and light bulbs to the kit. You might need them at your new place.
Time is extremely important
You need to be ready when your movers arrive. Any delay will cost you extra.
Protect your valuables
Don’t place things that are valuable and breakable at the bottom of moving boxes. Take care of them and use bubble wrap. Additionally, get moving insurance. All moving companies are required to provide it. At Empire Movers, we have three different options of moving insurance for you to choose from.
Avoid using garbage bags
A lot of people use them when moving. The only problem is, once the move is done and they hurry to unpack, they often end up throwing away stuff they need by mistake.
Take care of your pets
Moving can be a traumatizing experience for a pet. Arrange for them to stay somewhere during moving day, and transport them to your new home once everything is finished.
Befriend your new neighbors
It’s a good idea to talk to your new neighbors and inform them that you will be moving in, what kind of moving vehicles you’re using and when you’re moving in.
