What you shouldn’t pack when moving to New York

Are you thinking about moving to New York? If so, is the idea of packing your belongings and relocating them giving you headaches. Don’t worry. It’s normal. At Empire Movers we come across this all the time.

The idea of moving to a new home is fun, especially if that new home is located in New York City, the most awesome city in the world. But few people ever enjoy the work they have to put in the moving process. And they dread packing.

To help them out, we’ve put together this list of things you shouldn’t pack when moving to New York City.

Perishables

No matter the distance, avoid packing perishables. It doesn’t matter if they’re fresh or frozen, just don’t pack them. It’s not worth it.

New York is a huge city. It has everything you could possibly want. Especially food. That’s why there’s absolutely no reason for you to bring food with you. Instead of using up precious space in the moving van and having to pay extra, do yourself a service and let that ham or piece of cake behind.

Food goes bad. It attracts insects, creates mold, releases bad odor, it’s not a good idea to take it with you. Instead, in the days leading to your move, just clean out the fridge and order in. You won’t regret it, trust us.

Pets

Ok, so you probably won’t pack Fido, but you shouldn’t try to transport him in a van, together with your other stuff. That’s just a bad idea, that can cause a lot of harm to your pet. And, in fact, most moving companies won’t even allow you to put your pets inside their moving trucks. That’s why, if you’re going to move, it’s better that you take your little friends with you, inside the family car.

Dangerous items you shouldn’t pack when moving to New York

Don’t even think about transporting items that are flammable or explosive. Leave those behind. In fact, try to dispose of them according to the law.

Moving companies won’t allow you to load dangerous chemicals or poisons into their vans. But you should also include cleaning supplies, liquor, guns, pesticides, fireworks and other such items on the list of things that won’t be packed for your move to NYC.

If you think that you may need them, know that the law and the regulations of most moving companies forbid the transportation of such items. If you’re looking to move and are not sure if an item is safe or dangerous to transport, don’t hesitate to give us a call. We’ll give you all the information you need for a safe and pleasant move.
