The best way to store a mattress

June 13, 2018

When moving to a new location, you often start fresh, with new furniture, nu glassware, new everything. The old stuff gets thrown away. At least the stuff you don’t need anymore. But a mattress is not one such item. Many people see their mattresses as investments. And they’re probably right. In order to find the right one, you don’t only spend money, but time and effort as well. So you probably won’t be too quick to throw it away. Especially since a mattress can last for 10 or even 15 years. Fortunately, you can store it. At Empire Movers, we’ve moved thousands of mattresses. We know how to handle a mattress and, most importantly, we know how to store a mattress. If you want your mattress to survive storage, here’s what you have to do:

How to store a mattress the right way

1. Clean it thoroughly

There are so many ways to clean a mattress. No matter which one you choose, just make sure that your mattress is clean and ready for storage.

2. Wrap your mattress in plastic

Now that it’s clean, you can go ahead and wrap it in plastic. Don’t forget to secure the plastic with tape, so that it creates a tight seal.

If you really want to protect your mattress, you can also buy a high-quality mattress bag. It shouldn’t be more than $20 and it will definitely offer great protection.

3. Move it by truck

Some people just throw the mattress on top of their car and drive to storage. This is a mistake, one that can result in very nasty damage to your property. That’s why it’s best to use a moving truck.

4. Lay the mattress flat when storing.

When moving a mattress, people usually place it on the side. This is a smart move, as it creates more space. However, the same doesn’t go when it comes to storage. Never store a mattress upright for a long period of time. Lay it flat, just like it would normally lie.

5. Keep other items off it

Never store anything on your mattress, especially heavy objects. They can damage the springs and make the entire item useless.

6. Consider using climate-controlled storage

Moisture is the enemy of any mattress. It can ruin it fast and easy. That’s why it’s a good idea to invest in a climate-controlled storage unit. Such units can protect your property from moisture, temperature changes, pests and more.
