Moving with children

Here is a short tip list to take into consideration when moving with children. In order to make the move as easy as possible for them the best bet is to get them involved and keep a positive attitude.

  • Tell your children about the move as early and as much as possible. Discuss the move in an open family forum and break the news about the move to everyone in the family together. Be sure your child understands that the move is a positive event for the whole family.
  • Involve the kids in the moving process. They can help you plan the route your family will take to your new home or let them decorate and label their own boxes and pack their “special belongings.”
  • Take the “mystery” out of the move by taking the children to see their new home and neighborhood, introduce them to their new neighbors. This will reassure children that they will make new friends after the move.
  • Maintain daily routines as much as possible. Parents can provide some comfort by keeping some things the same. For instance, having the same nap times, meal times or play hours might be comforting, especially for younger children.
  • Take a day to celebrate the new move and the fact that they have been helpful all along. Let the children pick the activity to “celebrate” the move successful and the beginning of a new adventure.
