The rising threat of NYC moving scams
In recent years, the number of moving scams in New York City has surged alarmingly, posing a serious threat to both consumers and the moving industry as a whole. Fraudulent operators often impersonate reputable moving companies in an effort to exploit unsuspecting individuals preparing to relocate. Unfortunately, no business is immune to such deceitful practices—our own company, Empire Movers and Storage NYC, was recently targeted.
Fortunately, due to swift action, we were able to intercept the scammers before any major harm occurred. Just last week, Florin Petruta, the owner of Empire Movers, successfully identified and confronted the fraudsters in the act. We sat down with Mr. Petruta to discuss the incident in detail.
How did you discover that Empire Movers and Storage NYC’ identity had been stolen?
We were alerted by a customer who contacted us with a complaint. They claimed that “we” had doubled the price initially quoted just a few days prior. This was immediately suspicious, prompting a prompt internal investigation. It quickly became clear that another entity was impersonating our business.
Why do you believe Empire Movers was chosen as a target?
Empire Movers maintains a stellar reputation and is widely recognized within the industry. Our consistent delivery of high-quality service makes our name a valuable asset—unfortunately, even to criminals. By using the identity of a trusted company, scammers increase their chances of deceiving potential clients.
Can you explain how these NYC moving scams typically work?
Many consumers gravitate towards the lowest quoted price without realizing that such offers can be deceptive. In a highly competitive market like NYC, scammers often present extremely low estimates to lure clients. Once the deal is accepted, the scam begins to unfold.
These fraudulent movers often use entirely fabricated company profiles. On moving day, they arrive appearing legitimate, start loading belongings onto the truck, and then abruptly claim that the move involves more items or labor than initially estimated. They use this as a pretext to dramatically raise the price—at a moment when the customer has little recourse.
If the move involves long-distance travel, the situation becomes even more perilous. After departing, the scammers may demand double or even triple the agreed cost, citing fabricated reasons. By then, your possessions are already en route, and without legal safeguards, your only option is to pay the ransom to recover your belongings.
Worse still, victims often discover that the documents provided are fake, the company name is fabricated, and no legal recourse exists. This is precisely what happened in our case—fake name, fake address, fake everything.
Additionally, these scammers almost always insist on cash payments, making it nearly impossible to initiate a chargeback or trace the perpetrators.
How can customers protect themselves from NYC moving scams?
It all begins with a seemingly attractive quote. We urge people to thoroughly research moving companies before hiring them. There are many unscrupulous individuals eager to take advantage of the system. Verifying legitimacy is simple—check online reviews, confirm licensing on the company’s official website and compare it with the details listed on their paperwork.
However, do not assume that a license number alone is proof of legitimacy. Always cross-check company credentials through the official Department of Transportation (DOT) website or contact the DOT directly to confirm the mover’s legitimacy.
How quickly were you able to intervene once the scam was discovered?
The investigation is ongoing, but thanks to our immediate response, we were able to stop the fraudulent activity before it escalated. The primary individual involved has not yet been apprehended, but we remain vigilant and confident that justice will be served soon.
What impact can these scams have on a legitimate business?
These schemes cause millions of dollars in losses each year, taken directly from the pockets of hardworking citizens. The scammers operate with no remorse and exhibit a high level of coordination and intent. In some instances, these scams cross the line into criminal behavior, putting consumers and businesses at significant risk.
Could you have handled the situation without the customer’s help?
In all honesty, it would have been considerably more difficult. The customer’s awareness and decision to speak up were crucial in bringing this operation to light.
What advice would you offer to other moving companies who may be at risk?
Businesses must regularly audit their online presence to ensure no one is misusing their brand or company name. Failure to do so can lead not only to loss of revenue but also irreversible damage to the company’s reputation.
Were the scammers apprehended? Did the customer recover her money?
Although I cannot disclose specific legal outcomes, I can confirm that the customer did recover her funds, thanks to our swift intervention. Protecting our clients and our reputation was our top priority throughout the ordeal. We are committed to ensuring that our company is never used as a vehicle to harm others.
What is your final advice to consumers preparing to move?
Take time to verify the legitimacy of the company you intend to hire. During the peak moving season, incidents of NYC moving scams tend to rise significantly. Look for authentic customer reviews, confirm licensing, and verify that all paperwork is consistent and legitimate. When in doubt, contact the DOT directly. Staying informed is your best defense.
s and afterwards start taking advantage of people looking to move their belongings. They can target any business. They even targeted ours. Fortunately, we managed to stop them in time.
